How Old Should Your Baby Be for Newborn Photos?

Why I love the 7–14 day window

During those first couple of weeks, babies are often still very sleepy and naturally curl into the familiar positions they held in the womb.

Their tiny fingers, little toes, soft wrinkles and those gorgeous newborn creases are all still so fresh.

But more than anything, I love this window because everything feels so new.

You’re learning your baby.

They’re learning you.

And you’re all finding your way together.

There’s something really special about documenting those very first days.

What if my baby is older than two weeks?

Please don’t panic.

There’s no strict deadline for capturing your baby.

Every baby is different. Some are still beautifully sleepy at three weeks, while others are wide awake and taking in the world much earlier.

If your baby is a little older, it doesn’t mean you’ve missed your chance. It may simply mean that your session looks a little different.

And honestly, I love that too.

Some babies also start to develop baby acne from around two weeks old. This is completely normal and usually temporary, but I know it can sometimes make parents feel a little unsure about having photographs taken.

There’s no need to wait for your baby’s skin to be completely clear. It’s just another little part of those early days, and where appropriate, I can gently soften it in the final images while still keeping your baby looking like themselves.

These tiny details are part of their story too.

Awake moments are beautiful too

Newborn photography doesn’t have to mean your baby sleeps peacefully through the whole session.

Those wide, curious eyes.

The little stretches.

The yawns.

The funny faces.

The moments when they look right at you.

These are all part of who your baby is in those first precious weeks.

I don’t want to force your baby into a particular version of “newborn perfection”.

I want to capture your baby.

Your baby leads the session

My newborn sessions are slow and baby-led.

There’s no rushing from pose to pose, and no expectation for your baby to simply fit into a schedule.

If your baby needs to feed, we feed.

If they need a cuddle, we cuddle.

If they need settling, we take the time.

Some of the most beautiful photographs happen in those quiet moments in between.

You holding them close.

A tiny hand wrapped around your finger.

Their head resting on your chest.

The two of you simply being together.

Those moments matter just as much as the photographs where your baby is peacefully asleep.

Why I recommend booking before your baby arrives

One of the most common things I hear is, “We’ll book once the baby is here.”

And I completely understand why.

There are already so many unknowns when you’re expecting a baby. You don’t know exactly when they’ll arrive, what they’ll be like or how those first few days will unfold.

But newborn photographers often book their sessions well in advance. Waiting until your baby arrives can sometimes mean there isn’t space left within that lovely newborn window.

I recommend getting in touch during pregnancy and pencilling your session in around your due date.

You don’t need to know exactly when your baby will arrive.

Once they make their entrance, we’ll be in touch and find the right day together.

It simply means one less thing for you to think about once you’re in that newborn bubble.

There is no perfect newborn

Your baby may sleep the whole time.

They may want to feed every twenty minutes.

They may have a wide-awake morning.

They may need lots of cuddles.

They may surprise us completely.

They may have a little baby acne.

And that’s okay.

These photographs aren’t about creating a perfect newborn experience.

They’re about remembering how little they were, how they felt in your arms and what it felt like to be their Mum.

So, if you’re wondering whether you’ve left it too late, please get in touch.

Your baby doesn’t need to fit into a perfect timeline for their story to be worth capturing.

These days don’t need to be perfect to be worth remembering.

There isn’t one magical day when your baby suddenly becomes “too old” for newborn photos.

But there is a lovely little window when those sleepy, curled-up, brand-new details are still very much there.

For me, that sweet spot is usually around 7–14 days old.

Those first couple of weeks are such a special in-between time. Your baby is still so new to the world, and you’re still getting to know each other. They often settle beautifully in your arms, curl up in those gorgeous newborn positions and spend lots of time sleeping, feeding and being close to you.

It’s one of my favourite stages to photograph.
