A Gentle Guide For New Parents

How To Prepare The Night Before Your Newborn Photography Session

Newborn sessions are usually around 1–2 hours long, allowing plenty of time for your baby to settle, be fed if needed and gently photographed at their own pace. My studio is kept warm and cosy for your little one, so I recommend wearing layers so you can adjust your clothing if you become warm. There will also be soft white noise playing throughout the session to help create a calm and soothing environment for your baby.

The morning of your session, I suggest working back around one hour from your usual morning feeding time. If possible, bring your baby into the studio ready for a feed so they are full, content and settled before we begin.

A warm bath before your session can also be a beautiful way to help your baby relax. Many babies settle beautifully after a bath as they are calm, cosy and ready for cuddles. When dressing your baby before arriving, I recommend choosing loose-fitting clothing that is easy to remove without disturbing them too much. A simple zip-up onesie or outfit that doesn’t need to be pulled over their head is perfect.

If your baby is happy to do so, keeping them awake for a little while before arriving can sometimes help them settle into their session, but please don’t stress if they sleep the whole way there. Every baby is different, and we will always follow their cues.

During your newborn session, we will capture a beautiful mixture of images including your baby on their own, baby with each parent, and your family connection. If siblings are joining us, they will absolutely be included too, with special moments captured between your children.

For your clothing, I recommend soft neutral tones, warm earthy colours, creams, beiges and browns. These colours photograph beautifully and complement the warm, timeless style of my newborn imagery. The focus will always be on your connection and the love you share, rather than what you are wearing.

Your session takes place in my cosy Doreen studio, where everything is prepared ready for your arrival. There is plenty of parking available along the street, and usually a spot right outside the studio as well.

Most importantly, your only job is to arrive and relax.

Take this time to slow down and enjoy your baby. The newborn days can feel like a beautiful blur, and this session is about preserving the tiny details, the connection and the love that surrounds your baby during this incredible season.

There may be moments where I ask you to be close by for safety, but otherwise you can sit back, breathe, enjoy a cup of tea and watch your little one being photographed.

I cannot wait to welcome you and your family into my studio and capture these precious first moments with your baby.

The night before your newborn photography session doesn’t need to feel stressful or overwhelming. In fact, my biggest advice is to prepare a few little things ahead of time so the morning feels calm, relaxed and unrushed.

Your newborn session is designed to be a beautiful, slow experience where you can settle in, breathe, and enjoy this special season with your baby. There is no need to arrive feeling like everything needs to be perfect. Babies are unpredictable, and that is completely okay. We allow plenty of time for feeding, settling, cuddles and all those little moments that come naturally.

The night before your session, I recommend packing your nappy bag, preparing any bottles or feeding supplies you may need, laying out your outfits and placing your keys somewhere easy to find. These simple little things can make such a difference the next morning and help you arrive feeling calm rather than rushing out the door.
